Visiting Artists on Thursday…

March 4, 2007 by bahski8

The two artists were funny. I got there late but did see most of their work. I liked their ideas, aesthetically and slightly thought-provoking and humorous. The one where they filmed themselves in solitary confinement doing nothing for “one year” was interesting, but the best part of that was the hall of fame of people who had finished it. The karaoke was a breath of fresh air in a way because the other work was pretty boring, to me. It might have been my mood but I couldn’t stop thinking to myself how pointless the pieces were. They were digital art for arts sake, not really for a higher purpose, that i could detect. But I do see their value in their creativity and innovation and “somebody has to do it” sort of attitude. I respected their art in that in illustrates new realms in art and digital art that will expand future artists and people. My favorite site was where they put up subjects like: what you want to listen to before eating, or whatever, and people entered their own homemade sounds to the seemingly random request.

Visiting Artist-Stephen Vitiello

February 8, 2007 by bahski8

Stephen Vitiello seemed like a cool guy.  He is so dedicated to his creations and is apparent that he has emersed himself in his own element.  He said he stayed up all night working on something, the recording of Dolly Parton singing Stairway to Heaven, I believe.  I could not be on a computer or working with electronics all night.  I liked his concept of “art” in that he created environments for people to just exist in.  I do not think that would be something I enjoy doing, but it is good that it exists.  He is interested in the process of art, like spilling paint upon a speaker and eventually making a picture out of it.  The way they were made is more interesting than the pictures themselves.  Vitiello is a genius when it comes to technology around sound.  He figured out a way to hear the World Trade Center falling out of his thick glass window with a special microphone.  Stephen Vitiello is interested in things that I have not thought would be fun at all.  But he has definitely become successful with his passion and collaborated with others to expand everyone’s minds and its boundaries.  The only sound I enjoyed from what he played from his collection was the one where classical instruments played like different animals.  It came together sounding like an African savannah.  My overall impression of the visiting artist was innovative and slightly unenjoyable but definitely necessary to keeping the universe with fresh ideas.  I feel bad saying I did not enjoy the small number of sound clips we heard, like dogs and fireworks, but he seems like he thrives off the challenges of other people.  Oh, and the baby goats were very funny.  I think that should be played in malls or subways to make people laugh.
